Proposed Program

The Graduate Program in Education of UNIMEP, responsible for the Masters and Doctoral Programs, aims to train researchers, teachers and other professionals in the area.

From an academic / pedagogical point of view, since 1997 the organization of the Program and its activities of teaching, research / orientation and extension, in the ambit of both master's and doctorate, are guided by two thematic axes:

  • Educational Theories and Pedagogical Processes; and
  • Politics and History of Education.

The first focuses on the study of educational theories and pedagogical processes, especially from the analysis of pedagogical practice and its trends, dimensions and languages, in the social historical context, in broad terms and in the specificity of the school institution. The second focuses in particular the politics, management and history of education in Brazil, with its practical implications in the organization and planning of the educational system at its different levels.

These two thematic axes are visualized and understood in the academic / pedagogical practice of the Program as necessarily integrated, keeping its distinction in didactic terms so as not to lose sight of important dimensions of what ultimately constitutes the great thematic axis guiding the Program: O EDUCATIONAL AND PEDAGOGICAL PROCESS, in all its comprehension and extension, from its political, historical and epistemological determinants to its more specific theoretical-practical aspects.

In light of these statements, the Program pedagogically structures three Research and Research Centers, namely:

  • History and Philosophy of Education
  • Educational Practices and Social Relationships in School and Non- School Space
  • Teacher Work, Teacher Training and Educational Policies The Centers of Studies and Research are constituted by the agglutination, by affinity of thematic interests, of a minimum number of professors and students of the Program, and are responsible for the organization and development of the academic-scientific production, which includes, among others, the Development of research lines and projects, participation in the provision of compulsory basic subjects, provision of three to four "core" disciplines annually, coordination of supervised activities, and orientation of dissertations and theses. In addition, the Nuclei work their specificity in the correlation with the thematic axis (s) and with the other nuclei, in such a way that the Program assures its unity in the tension of the different. 
  • The adoption of this pedagogical organizational structure of the Program occurred after several years of reflections on the experience of the structure in concentration areas, especially when evaluating the implementation of the Doctoral Course. Unlike the Areas of Concentration, the Nuclei of Studies and Research are much more flexible and rich structures of organizational possibilities. They are spaces that bring together and integrate the scientific-academic activities of teachers and students, where much more easily can be given the discussion and the incorporation of new themes, research sub-themes and new theoretical-methodological approaches.



The Graduate Program in Education of the Methodist University of Piracicaba UNIMEP (PPGE-UNIMEP) aims to:

  • promote the scientific and in-depth education of researchers, teachers and professionals in the field of Education;
  • to develop systematic studies and advanced research on problems of Education in a broad sense and Education related to different institutional spheres, especially the school context;
  • to stimulate scientific production, based on the projects of its teachers and students, as well as the elaboration of works resulting from theses and dissertations;
    • Encourage actions that promote exchange with national and international institutions linked to the production of knowledge and projects, as well as integration with entities and sectors of the community, in order to contribute to the improvement of the Brazilian educational reality.

Art. 1 The Graduate Program in Education of the Methodist University of Piracicaba - Unimep (PPGE-UNIMEP) aims to:

  1. promote thorough scientific and teacher training of researchers, teachers and professionals in the field of education;
    1. develop systematic studies and advanced research on problems

Education in its broadest sense and the relative education to different institutional spheres, particularly the school environment;

  1. stimulate scientific production, based on projects of its faculty and students, as well as the preparatory work resulting from theses and dissertations;
  2. encourage actions that facilitate the exchange with national and international institutions linked to the production of knowledge and acting projects, and the integration with entities and sectors of the community, to contribute to the improvement of the Brazilian educational reality.

Art. 2 The PPGE-UNIMEP confer academic degrees of Master and Doctor of Education.


ADVISORY BODIES, Deliberative and executive

Art. 3 The PPGE-UNIMEP covers the following agencies:

  1. Meeting of the Program, as a consultative body, under the Statute of Unimep;
    1. Council of the Program, as a deliberative body;
    2. Coordination of the Program, as the executive body.




Art. 4 The Program Council is composed:

  1. Coordinator, its president;
    1. members of the teaching staff of the permanent faculty of the course, subject to the provisions of § 1 of this Article;
    2. of student representatives in number corresponding to 25% (twenty five percent) of the non students, nominated by their peers as established in the General Rules.

§ 1 The composition of the Program Council shall not exceed fifteen

(15) members.

§ 2. It is for the Assembly Program representatives indicate teachers when necessary to ensure compliance with the limit established in the previous paragraph.

§ 3. The student representation must have one (1) alternate. Art. 5 It is the Program Council:

I prepare, after consultation with the Assembly of the program, its pedagogical project, which will be submitted for the opinion of the Faculty for approval by the Board of Education and Research - CONSEPE and approval by the University Council - CONSUN;

  1. coordinate academic and administrative activities of the Program;
    1. establish guidelines and standards for the didactic-pedagogic system of the Program, respected academic policy approved by the Superior Bodies;
      1. approve the schedule of classes, activities and program calendar;
    2. approve the teachers' work plans, and to monitor its implementation and issue an opinion on the report of the activities carried out;

SAW. coordinating the evaluation process of the program, heard their Assembly from its pedagogical project, its objectives and the rules laid down by CAPES;

  1. participate in the selection process, retention or replacement of teachers Program;

VIII. propose the acquisition of assets to the library; IX indicate the name of the coordinator;

  1. decide in the first instance, resources in pedagogical issues in regimental fashion;
  2. draft proposal to amend the specific provisions of the Program, forwarding it for adoption by the Council of Faculty at CONSEPE and the CONSUN;

XII. oversee the development of the research projects of the professors and students of the Program;

XIII. perform other activities that you are fit.

Art. 6 The Council's program meets at least two (2) times per semester and extraordinarily convened by Program Coordinator on his own initiative or attending the request of at least two thirds (2/3) of its members and must include the call to the agenda to be discussed.



Art. 7 The Coordination PPGE, executive body that coordinates, supervises and monitors its activities, is carried out by a coordinator, as Statute of Unimep.

Art. 8 The duties of Program Coordinator

  1. call and chair the meetings of the Program Council with voting rights, including the quality;
  2. represent the program before the authorities and bodies of Unimep;
  3. draw up the schedule of classes, activities and academic calendar, submitting it for approval by the Program Council, according to the Academic Calendar Unimep;
  4. direct, coordinate and supervise the activities of the Program as well as forward to the competent bodies decisions arising thereof;
  5. monitor compliance with the school system and fulfillment of programs and teaching plans, and the implementation of other projects Coordination;

SAW. inform the Director of the College the progress of activities in the Program;

VII. decide on studies of utilization requests, forwarding them to the appreciation of the Program Council;

VIII. comply with and enforce, under the Program, legislation and decisions adopted by the competent bodies;

  1. promote, together with the Program Board, assessment of activity reports, work plans of Program teachers and submit them for approval at the Faculty;
  2. prepare, within the period prescribed by the competent bodies, the report of the activities of the Program;
  3. submit to the Director of the School subsidies for the preparation of the budget of the Program proposal;

XII. exercise disciplinary power that is conferred under General Unimep Rules;

XIII. participate in the selection process, promotion, leave and dismissal of teachers in accordance with the General Regulations and the Teaching Career Plans and jobs and salaries of Unimep;

XIV. approve the appointment of teachers to compose examination board for the Qualifying Examination, the Master of Defense and the Defense Thesis, heard their Studies and Research.

XV. perform the other duties set forth in the General Regulations and those that may be assigned by the agencies of the Senior Management and the Interim Unimep;



Art. 9 At the time of registration for the selection exam, the candidate must meet the requirements of the Notice regarding the selection process as well as the specific guidelines of the Program.

Art. 10. Examination of selection of candidates for the PPGE is carried out under the coordination of the Selection Committee, whose composition is defined by the Program Council.

§ 1. The Selection Committee, together with the Program Coordinator, shall draw up criteria, procedures, schedule of activities of selection and ways of participation of the other faculty members, a proposal to be submitted for approval by the Program Council.

§ 2 When the Program Board has heard the Selection Committee, to decide on the completion of the evaluations and determine the list of candidates with the right to the first call for registration, as well as the alternate candidates.

Art. 11. The selection procedures include proficiency exam in a foreign language, being required of candidates for the PhD examination relative to a language other than that approved in their Master.

§ 1 The foreign student must perform proficiency exam in Portuguese, as well as meet the requirements of the program as the language of knowledge (s) foreign (s).

§ 2 Candidates fail the exam of proficiency in a foreign language or English language may undergo further tests within a year.

Art. 12. In the case of candidates linked to institutional, national or international agreements, already approved by the competent bodies, documentation requirements and the candidate selection procedure shall be established by

Council Program.



Art. 13. The registration must take place obligatorily each semester, within the deadlines established in own schedule, set by the Academic Secretariat.

Single paragraph. Upon initial registration, the applicant must submit to the Master, the undergraduate course diploma or certificate of completion of graduate course recognized by the MEC and the

Doctorate Master degree or minutes of the dissertation of program graduate accredited by CAPES.

Art. 14. It is allowed to apply for student, upon justification, enrollment in the lock

Program for a period of one semester.

§ 1 Exceptionally, and upon justification, may be allowed one second locking with the opinion of the Advisor Professor and approval by the Program Council.

§ 2. The registration of locking the program exempts the student financial commitments to the University during the locking period.

§ 3. The locking period is incorporated in the maximum period of completion you are entitled to the student.

Art. 15. The student can only apply for registration lock after you have completed at least one semester of the program.

Single paragraph. It is forbidden to lock in the last half of the course.

Art. 16. The candidate ranked in the selection exam that does not make registration within the deadline set by the Academic Calendar will be considered dropouts.

Art. 17. If there are vacancies, enrollment in elective courses of the program, as a student in Special Regime may be admitted, candidates who present a copy of the undergraduate degree, summarized curriculum vitae and 1 photo 3cmx4cm.

§ 1 The student can attend up to two disciplines, other than exclusively offering regular student.

§ 2. The number of vacancies for special students will be set by the coordinator, after consultation with the teacher responsible for discipline.

§ 3. If the student Special Regime were to be classified for a place in the Program may require the use of credits previously concluded, in accordance with this Regulation.

§ 4 The student special regime assumes the same duties of regular students under (s) subject (s) to attend.




Art. 18. The number of vacancies for the selection of candidates for the Master and Doctorate is approved by CONSUN.

Single paragraph. In establishing the number of vacancies will be taken into account the proportion of teaching hours available in the Program and the guidelines issued by the

Higher bodies of Unimep and CAPES. CHAPTER VIII


Art. 19. The Academic organization comprises the following formal academic activities:

  1. subjects;
    1. courses, workshops, seminars, projects, lectures, supervised activities and other related;
      1. Scientific research activities and guidance Dissertation and Thesis;
    2. university extension activities, such as symposia, seminars, study weeks, debates, meetings and other related.

Art. 20. The formal academic activities Program are guided by the following organizational criteria:

  1. themes;
    1. core studies and research.

§ 1 The themes made by the program are "Educational Theories and Pedagogical Processes" and "Politics and History of Education", which constitute the objective of seeking to understand the educational and pedagogical processes considering from its political conditions, historical and epistemological their theoretical and practical aspects more specific, and are ample references to the development of all the scientific and academic activities.

§ 2 The core research and development (NEPs) are made based on the agglutination of theoretical and methodological interests and affinity with specific knowledge fields, according to criteria subordinated to the two main themes of the Program.

§ 3. The composition of NEPs and their forms of development activities are established by resolution of the Program Council, after consulting the

Assembly Program.

§ 4. The Program faculty bind to only one NEP.

§ 5 NEPs should establish lines and relevant research projects to their specificities, offer courses and other activities within their areas of expertise and to promote the integration of teaching, research and guidance.

§ 6 As guidelines established by the Program Council, each NEP should develop activities that foster exchanges with other Clubs and meet the program's needs.



Art. 21. To Professor Advisor, approved by the Program Council from among teachers who integrate, including external advisors, it is to guide the student in the development and elaboration of the dissertation or thesis and in other formal academic activities, as well  as indicate to the Coordinator Program members examination banking qualification and defense of dissertation or thesis.

Single paragraph. The orientation Thesis Dissertation and teaching should be carried out by Ph.D. carrier.



Art. 22. Compliance with the studies required to obtain the degree is expressed in credits.

Single paragraph. The credit unit corresponds to fifteen (15) hours / semi class studies teaching the student under supervision.

Art. 23. The student must complete thirty (30) credits for the Masters and sixty (60) credits for a doctorate in formal academic activities, considering the requirements of the Program.

§ 1 The student who abandon any discipline, without requiring the locking of registration will be considered failed in this discipline.

§ 2. The fulfillment of thirty (30) Master's credits and sixty (60) Doctoral credits covers the following academic activities of the Program: compulsory courses, elective courses, supervised activities under the NEP that the student is bound and defense Dissertation or Thesis.

§ 3. In the calculation of credits for a doctorate, will be awarded thirty

(30) credits for the Master, regardless of the number of credits actually completed by the student in his master's degree.

§ 4 The student who, in accordance with Article 31 of these Rules, go directly to the Doctoral degree, must comply with the 30 credits for the graduate school and for calculating the total of 60 credits, will be attributed to him 30 credits by passing the Direct PhD, regardless of the total credits that has fulfilled in the master program.

Art. 24. They are formal academic requirements for obtaining the corresponding degree:

  1. Master: compliance with the credits for a minimum of twelve (12) months and a maximum of 24 (twenty four) months, with public defense of the dissertation before the Examining Committee.
  2. Doctor: compliance with the credits for a minimum of eighteen (18) months and a maximum of 48 (forty-eight) months with the public defense of the thesis before the Examining Committee.

§ 1. At the discretion of the Program Council that period may be extended for a maximum of six (06) months for a master's degree and doctorate.

§ 2. Of the total credits to be paid in formal academic activities, 70% (seventy percent), at least, must be met in the program, and this percentage itself, in the case of PhD, does not cover the credit computation attributed to Master's degree course.

Art. 25. The student must be enrolled in a dissertation or thesis to complete the Orientation

Master and Doctorate.

Single paragraph. The student can only enroll in dissertation or thesis Guidance with the approval of Teacher Advisor.



Art. 26. The evaluation of the student is expressed by the concepts: A - Excellent;

B - Good;

C - Regular;

D - Incomplete;

E - Unsatisfactory.

§ 1 The concepts "A", "B" and "C" grant approval, entitling the credits, provided the student has a minimum frequency of 75% (seventy five percent) evaluated the academic activity.

§ 2 The concept "D" reproves and is interim in nature, being awarded exceptionally to the candidate that has not met all the requirements for evaluation in a given formal academic activity, is authorized to, within a period not exceeding 30 days, after the publication of the evaluation results of the semester, to complete its work, receiving then the final concept, according to the General Rules of the UNIMEP.

§ 3 The concept "and" condemns and does not give credit, as the General Rules of the Unimep.

§ 4. The student who obtains concept "E" in 03 (three) formal academic activities will be automatically disconnected from the program.




Art. 27. The Qualifying Exam includes assessing the knowledge related to the dissertation project or thesis.

Art. 28. The Qualifying Examination will be held before an examining board, composed of three professors, doctoral degree holders, and chaired by Professor Advisor.

§ 1 The Master's students must complete their qualifying examination within 20 months after the start of the course.

§ 2. The doctoral students must complete their qualifying examination within 36 months after the start of the course.

Art. 29. For registration to the Qualifying Examination student must:

I have passed proficiency examination in a foreign language, for the Master, and in two foreign languages, to the Doctorate.

  1. have completed at least 50% (fifty percent) of the credits in supervised subjects and activities;
  2. have presented scientific production according to the standards set by the Program Council.

§ 1 Qualification Examination may be requested only by the permission of Professor Advisor by completing and signing a specific form to be delivered to the Department of Integrated Assistance to

Postgraduate courses, along with examples, at least 30 days before the scheduled date.

§ 2. The international student must additionally have passed proficiency examination in English.

Art. 30. The student will be considered approved in the Qualifying Exam only if the assessment of the members of the examination board is unanimous; the student failed the qualifying exam will undergo further examination, after the minimum period of 03 (three) and maximum of six (06) months of the completion of the first  examination after approval of the Teacher Advisor.

Art. 31. Examining, met the following criteria when the Master Qualification Exam, may recommend to the Program Council

candidate passing the examination directly to the doctorate without completing the Master - Direct Doctorate:

  1. upon request of interested in specific form provided by the Department of Integrated Service to Graduate Courses;
  2. when the quality of the project and the candidate's scholarship before the Examining Board so require;
  3. on the advice of Professor Advisor, based on proven scientific production of the candidate and his curriculum vitae.

§ 1 The decision to recommend the candidate for the Doctorate Direct should be taken unanimously by the Examining.

§ 2 Examining should formally submit its decision to the Program Coordinator, who will submit to the review of the Program Council.

§ 3 If the Program Council is manifested in favor of the applicant's recommendation to direct PhD, ask the opinion of an external teacher to the institution on the quality of the project, the relevance of the scientific production and the candidate's professional experience.

§ 4 External Teacher must submit its opinion to the Program Council, which will issue a conclusive opinion, forwarding it to the Faculty Council for approval.

§ 5 A final decision on the direct Doctoral request must be issued no later than sixty (60) days from the Qualifying Exam.




Art. 32. The teachers employed full time 40 hours per week, working in the program should develop academic activities in graduation.

Art. 33. Students enrolled in the program, on condition that grantees must develop complementary activities, as required by the respective funding agencies.




Art. 34. By signing up for the defense of the dissertation or thesis defense, the student will deliver the Secretary of Integrated Service of Graduate Courses proper copies in number set by the program.

Article 35. Both the thesis as the thesis should be written in Portuguese, containing mandatory summaries in two languages: Portuguese and English..

Single paragraph. The dissertation or thesis may be written in Spanish, and this option should be reported to the Council of the Program Advisor Professor, after the approval of the student in Qualifying Exam.

Art. 36. After the defense of dissertation or thesis defense and the proper approval, and obtained the respective authorization Teacher Advisor, the student will deliver the Secretary of the Integrated Service Post-Graduate Courses copies of the final version of the Master's Thesis or Doctoral Thesis in number set by the program.

Single paragraph. The final version of the dissertation or thesis will include the recommendations and corrections of the examination

board and will be delivered in print and digital version after the conference and signing of Teacher Advisor, the Secretary of

Integrated care for Postgraduate Courses, within sixty (60) days after the date of the defense, and basic requirement for making the diploma.

Art. 37. The defense of the dissertation or thesis defense will be held in open court, before examining board composed of 03 (three) sitting members to dissertation and five (05) full members for the doctoral thesis and shall indicate and chaired by professor Advisor and approved by the Coordinator


Single paragraph. The defense of the dissertation or thesis defense will be held in a period not exceeding sixty (60) days from the date of constitution of the examination board by the Program Coordinator.

Art. 38. The examining board will be composed of teachers holders of the title of doctor.

§ 1 In the composition of the examination board will be guest lecturers from other institutions included, preferably related to the Graduate Programs recognized by CAPES, not belonging to the teaching staff of Unimep being

1 (one) for dissertation and two (02) for the doctoral thesis.

§ 2. The examining board will be composed of, besides the holders, one (1) internal alternate member and one (1) external to the master, and two (2) internal alternate members and two (2) external to the doctorate.

§ 3 is optional for the student veto the name of one (1) member of the examination board.

Art. 39. Once the public session of the dissertation or thesis defense, the examining committee will meet privately to each examiner express your evaluation.

§ 1 The assessment made by the examiners will be expressed by the concepts: Pass or Fail.

§ 2 The Master titles in Education and Doctor of Education will be awarded only if the student is deemed to be approved by a majority of the members of the examination board.




Art. 40 may be availed credits earned in masters and doctoral programs undertaken in institutions duly accredited by CAPES, the student must submit transcripts and teaching plan of discipline.

§ 1 The use of credits that the heading of this article shall be determined, after examining each case by the Program Coordinator, after hearing the teacher advisor.

§ 2. The use of credits may not exceed 30% (thirty percent) of the credits provided for in Art. 23 of this Regulation.

§ 3 The use of credits held in foreign institutions can only be computed if the educational institution is recognized by CAPES.

Art. 41 may be utilized in pupil claims routed condition under special regime, respecting the limit up to 2 (two) subjects for the Master and one (1) to Doctorate degree.




Art. 42. Students who have not defended the dissertation or thesis on schedule in

Art. 24 will be automatically removed from the Program.

§ 1 The Program Board shall submit to the Council of the Faculty of recognized cases exceptional.

§ 2 The student who re-enter the program through the selection process, you may have use of fulfilled activities in accordance with the provisions in these

Specific standards and can enjoy routed credits up to a maximum of 5 years.



Art. 43. These Specific Rules come into force on the date of its approval by CONSUN, repealed the contrary provisions.

Studies and Research Centers


  • History and Philosophy of Education

This Center aims to study and research the history of education and the philosophical foundations of educational theories and practices. Are their themes: historical background, philosophical and political education; epistemological, ethical and aesthetic theories of education; critical theory and education; history of school institutions; History educators subjects; history and philosophy of education reforms in Brazil and Latin America; new technologies and education. 

  • Teaching Work, Teacher Training and Education Policy

This Nucleus investigates problems related to teacher training and educational policies with its central theme the teaching, taken in its everyday and subjective dimensions as well as its socio-political conditions. Their investigations include from early childhood  education to higher education and seek to understand the teaching from four aspects: public policy, school organization and management, initial and continuing education, school routine. 

  • Educational Practices and Social Relations in the School Space and no School

Designing educational practices and social practices, the purpose of the core is to contribute to the understanding of the formation of the student subject in school and non-school conditions. The studies are mainly theoretical reference to historical-cultural approach and orient themselves to the investigation of human development processes; studies on education; educational work in different social contexts; special education; education and social inequalities; language, reading and writing; education in science and mathematics and environmental education.
